Description

Hummingbird Hall strives to bring together the developmental needs of young children with the increasing demands of state content standards to provide a positive and enriched first school experience. Capitalizing on the unselfconscious egocentrism of the young child, we focus first on the self and family, with exposure to an increasingly larger world that comes to include the school and immediate community; the course of study could be summarized as "The World Around Me."

Units of study include habitats -- from the backyard, to the farms, watersheds, redwood forests and ocean -- that surround us. Life cycles are explored through raising tadpoles, chickens, silkworms and butterflies. Using science and social studies as organizing principles, math and literacy, art, music, and the performing arts, health and physical education are integrated in keeping with state standards as well as a child-centered approach to learning. Students have opportunities to participate in numerous field trips, access the school library, learn and grow with third grade reading buddies, engage in dance, music and the performing arts in an active, hands-on classroom environment that effectively provides both structure and choice for young learners.
