How To Create a Class Website

Teachers, Parents, and Students:

Have you looked at the class websites? Choose "Visit Our Classrooms" on our homepage. Each classroom page will have a link to the class website if there is one. If not, you can create a simple website for your class even if you don't know anything about creating websites. Follow these instructions using the software you're most familiar with.

Blog website:

This is the simplest option and the one we are now encouraging. You can create a blog at any general blogging site, such as Blogger.com, then e-mail the link to the webmaster (remove the word REMOVE before sending the e-mail). There are also school-specific websites where you can create a classroom page such as classbuilder.com, but we suggest using a free service.

The beauty of this method is that each time you update your blog, your classroom website will also automatically be updated.

If the teacher or a parent has free web space that you want to use, you could also create a website there and e-mail the link to the webmaster. Again, any changes you make will be automatically reflected on the Linscott website.

Other options for creating class websites, not recommended!

Microsoft Word:

  1. Lay out text and photos as you would for a printed page. Don't try to get too fancy. Word is most successful at exporting documents that have a simple layout.
  2. Save your file as a Word file on your disk.
  3. Choose "Save as Web Page" from the File menu. The name of your file should be yourclassname.html, e.g. discoveryroom.html.
  4. Create a new folder to have Word put the files in, then choose "Save".
  5. The folder that Word creates will contain all the files we need. Zip (on a PC) or StuffIt (on a Mac) the folder, then contact the webmasters to get an e-mail address to send it to.

Netscape or Mozilla Composer:

(free to download from netscape.com or mozilla.org)

  1. Create a folder where you will put the website on your disk.
  2. Put copies of all the photos that you want on your page into the new folder you created.
  3. In Composer, choose File / New / Composer Page.
  4. Save the Composer file into the same folder as the images. The name of your file should be yourclassname.html, e.g. discoveryroom.html.
  5. Using the Composer interface, bring in images and type in text. For images, notice that you should have "URL is relative to page location" checked. This way your images will work when we import your page onto the website.
  6. Save your work.
  7. The folder you created will contain all the files we need. Zip (on a PC) or StuffIt (on a Mac) the folder, then contact the webmasters to get an e-mail address to send it to.

Other simple tools and submitting photos and text:

Other word processing programs can also output HTML. The steps should be similar to the steps outlined above for Word. If you aren't comfortable at all with layout in Word, you may submit photos and text by e-mail. But please keep it simple and don't e-mail large photos.
